Activating your card

When your new debit or credit card arrives, you'll need to activate it before you can use it

Confirming payments

In line with upcoming payment services regulations, when you use your credit or debit card online, you may be asked to confirm online card payments more often. This will make it harder for fraudsters to make payments without your knowledge. The fastest and most secure way to authenticate these transactions will be to do so through your HSBC CI & IoM Mobile Banking app, using a Digital Secure Key. Alternative methods are available. Find out more.

Debit cards

Sign the back of your debit card and choose one of these activation options:

Online banking

  1. Log on to online banking.
  2. Select the account you want to activate the card for.
  3. Select Manage, then Activate card, and follow the instructions.

Phone

Call 0800 783 5263.

Lines open 08:00-20:00 every day.

Just make a transaction (such as a cash withdrawal, balance enquiry or mobile top-up) and your new card will be automatically activated without any on-screen notification.

Please note you can't choose this option if it's your first debit card from HSBC.

Please note, if you are a joint account holder and have more than one card on the account, you'll need to activate each card individually.

Credit cards

As soon as you receive your new credit card, sign the back and choose one of two easy ways to activate it:

Online banking

  2. Select the account you want to activate the card for.
  3. Select Manage, then Activate card, and follow the instructions.
