Proof of identity

Making sure it's really you

When you open an account with us, we will ask you to prove your identity and confirm your address. It's just one of many security measures in place to ensure the only person who can access your money, is you.

All documents must be originals.

 

List of acceptable identification:

  • Current Passport
  • Current National Identity Card
  • Current Driving Licence (provisional licences are acceptable)
  • Birth Certificate – Jersey, Guernsey and Isle of Man (under 18s only)
  • Letter to Bank (for island residents over 60 years of age) from a local advocate/lawyer, doctor, chartered accountant or senior parish official – please speak to a member of staff to find out if this form of identification will be acceptable
  • Letter addressed to the Bank from the Prison Governor or other authorised prison official, applicable for island residents over 60 years of age

 

List of acceptable address verification:

  • Rates bill (valid for current year)
  • Utility bill - including satellite TV or landline phone (dated within last four months) 
  • Credit card bill/statement from non-HSBC or HSBC Group companies (dated within the last four months)
  • Mortgage statement from non-HSBC or HSBC Group companies (dated within the last 12 months)
  • Tenancy agreement
  • Current Driving Licence where the address is clearly shown (not applicable to Jersey or new Isle of Man licences without address)
  • Bank Statement, including online bank statements
  • Correspondence from a central or local government department or agency, such as the States of Jersey (Government), States of Guernsey (Government) or the Isle of Man Government. The following are examples of correspondence issued by local government departments:

-  States Departments letters

-  Parish Authorities letters (including but not limited to Social Security, Local Authority and Housing Department letters)

- Tax Notifications

  • Home visit 

 

Always try to obtain one of the above address verification documents in the first instance. Where you are unable to provide any of the above documents, the following items are acceptable: 

  • Letter from a local Channel Islands or Isle of Man nursing home or residential home for the elderly  
  • Letter from a local Channel Islands or Isle of Man employer (not acceptable for Channel Islands & Isle of Man Commercial Banking) 
  • Letter from a principal or senior official of a university or college (Jersey/Guernsey/Isle of Man students)  
  • Solicitors letter confirming house purchase
  • Letter addressed to the Bank from the Prison Governor or other authorised prison official
